County Scene – around the Leagues - Inter-County

INDEX

The County first team is playing all their matches away again this season but it will be very interesting to see how well they do in the Premier B division. Caroline Coombs and Karina Bryant who won several County Open tournaments (including Herts Open on 27th September 97) and got to the Nationals earlier this year are always worth watching. The Nationals, starting 30th January, have moved this year to The Dolphin Centre, Haywards Heath, Sussex. The County teams are likely to include any of the following Herts bright stars: Rebecca Brown from Tring, Lindsey Orchard and Helen Palmer from Welwyn Garden City, Liza Parker from Park Street, Suzanne Rayapan from Stevenage. Having seen them in practice sessions at the Herts University I can say their play is really stunning. So come along and watch. The County teams continue to be sponsored by Ashaway.

 Report of Junior County Trials

Keen to maintain the success of Herts juniors at national level over recent years, culminating in a first ever win by a "small" county of the coveted Inter Counties Champion County U16 title at the end of last season, junior county badminton selectors held trials for this season’s squads at Gosling Sports Park on Sunday 21 September. All junior badminton players who were under 14 or under 16 on 1st September ‘97 were eligible to take part, competing against last season’s squad members and against each other for a place.

John Smith (U14 Manager) said that the standard this year was encouragingly good for the start of the season.

New HBA Membership benefits and the ‘Advantage Card’

If you are not already a member then you can learn more about the advantages and join up.

This year HBA committee have been working hard to add value to the benefits you get from your fees. New items include:

The new HBA membership and Advantage card

The HBA membership and Advantage card became available at the end of October and is valid from 1st November ‘97 to 31st October ’98. As well as your name and club name there is your club and personal HBA number: these are the BA of E numbers needed on Results sheets and for BA of E and HBA tournaments (so they should be easier to find in future).

Discounts from vendors in larger Herts Towns

HBA have negotiated discounts with several vendors in the larger towns and from selected Herts mail order companies. The HBA cards will be needed to claim discounts. The vendors providing discounts to HBA members are those in the ‘Latest Kit or Tried and Tested‘ article in the paper copy of the Newsletter (See HBA Membership Advantages ).

Club and League Developments – increasing membership?

Many clubs and leagues report falling numbers, many too, find it difficult to find volunteers to help. There are, now, a number of opportunities to make changes to all this. The Sports Council’s Running Sport programme, which is a ‘workshop’ (not ‘sweatshop’!) for club development provides concrete ideas and practical support to help clubs with all aspects of running a club – finding and retaining volunteers, increasing membership, club administration. Herts Badminton Association in conjunction with the National Development Coach (and Running Sport Tutor), Ray Learney have organised the two hour workshop for Thursday 5th February at The Council Offices, Welwyn Garden City. It has additional information specific to Hertfordshire (and a free booklet). This is free for HBA-BAoE member clubs. £5 for non-members. Contact Dave Bartlett 01438 715374 if interested.

 BISI At School

The BA of E is launching Badminton Into School Initiative (‘BISI’) on 8th October at the Science Museum with none other than our Minister for Sport Tony Banks (who said he only speaks football?). BISI is aimed at Primary school children. Teachers in clusters of schools in an area are being approached for a half day’s BISI coaching. They then can share a BISI bag (£400) with a net, rackets, balls, shuttles, hoops, etc and 6 lesson cards. The idea is that it must be fun and hand-eye co-ordination is developed with a slight emphasis on badminton. (Coaches interested in becoming BISI tutors to teach the teachers contact Dave Bartlett, Herts Coaching Co-ordinator 01438 715 374.)
