Glencoe International final results -report by Ken Poole, the Glencoe Club The finals of the Glencoe International Invitational started off with Mixed Doubles. It was to be the first of three finals for Canada's Iain Sydie. It was obviously an emotional day for the British players with Princess Diana's funeral being shown on television. Nathan Robertson and Jo Wright wore black armbands and flags were at half mast around the courts. Sydie and Julien took the first game 15-9 and were up in the second before Robertson and Wright had a run of points to win 15-11. Sydie and Julien regrouped and never trailed in the third, winning 15-10. The ladies' doubles final was next after a 30 minute break for Jo Wright who had just played the mixed. Jo was suffering a little from a slightly pulled abdominal muscle. She and her partner Lorraine Cole did well to keep the first game close against the highly ranked Dutch team of Monique Hoogland and Erica van Den Heuvel. In the end it was a convincing 15-12, 15-4 victory for the Dutch girls. Jeroen van Dijk either picked his game up a notch from the previous two days or Sydie's efforts in three events finally caught up with him during the men's singles final. Whichever was the case, Sydie looked a step slower than his Dutch opponent and was never in the match. Jeroen looked sharp and fully recovered from the stomach trouble he had in Jakarta during the World Cup. Kelly Morgan won the ladies' singles quite convincingly over Canada's vetern Denyse Julien 11-4, 11-2. The men's doubles was an all Canadian affair. Darryl Yung was back in his first final after a year of absence from badminton due to school and injuries. He and Sydie are a new team this year and the crowd was curious to see if they could defeat Canada's number 2 team of Moody and Beres. Most of the first game saw short rallies that often ended with an unforced error. The rallies started getting longer near the end of the game and Moddy/Beres went from 10-6 down to 13-10 up. Sydie/Yung managed to even the score on their second service and setting at 5 was chosen. Beres/Moody got up 4-3 and were able to keep on the attack but 2 incredible smash returns by Darryl Yung on match point kept them from closing. The serve went back to Sydie/Yung and they got 2 points to win the first game 18-17. The second game saw lots of exciting rallies and Sydie /Yung came out on top 15-7. All the winners were presented with a special custom made silver Western belt buckle, engraved with the tournament information, and leather belt.
