The Canadian Open is a two-star tournament in badminton's international Grand Prix circuit. The Indonesians, who normally participate in the Canadian Open, did not enter this year because the Open was being held at the same time as the celebrations of the fiftieth year of Indonesian independence. Other top competitors did not enter as they are focusing their energies on the three, four and five-star tournaments which are given more emphasis in terms of qualifying for the 1996 Olympic Games.
