END WORLD CUP - SUPRIANTO AND YE WIN SINGLES TITLES September 17, 1995 - Joko Suprianto beat fellow Indonesian Allan Budi Kusuma 15-7 11-15 15-8 to win the men's singles badminton title of the badminton World Cup on Sunday in Jakarta, Indonesia. Suprianto, ranked fifth in the world, overcame tough resistance from the third-ranked Kusuma before noisy flag-waving fans at the legendary Senayan Stadium in Jakarta. Kusuma attacked in his usual style but Suprianto calmly countered with overhead clears and drop shots. "Allan is attack-minded, so I will try to blunt his attacks. With his attacks ineffective, he will be frustrated," Suprianto said before the match. In the women's singles finals, China's Ye Zhaoying continued her recent supremacy over Indonesia's world number one Susi Susanti with a tough 12-9 2-11 12-9 victory. Susanti had hoped to avenge her defeat by the Chinese in the Lausanne world championships in May but world number three Ye prevailed in an exhausting match which was in the balance until the final few minutes. Susanti looked tense in the opening game but seemed to find her confidence in the second as she drew level with her trademark attritional style of long rallies and attacking lobs. But in the third set her efforts seemed to exhaust her more than her opponent. After Susanti took the lead, Ye managed to stop her advance and the greater strength of the Chinese took her to victory. Susanti was sporting at the end. "I accept my defeat because Ye Zhaoying has sharp reflexes, is more mature as a player (now) and seldom makes mistakes," she said. In the men's doubles finals, world champions Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky of Indonesia beat surprise finalists Sakrapee Thongsari and Pramote Teerawiwatana of Thailand 15-4 15-9. The Thai pair had upset Indonesians Denny Kantono and Antonius 15-8 15-8 in Saturday's semifinals. In the ladies' doubles finals, two Indonesian pairs were battling on even terms with Lili Tampi and Finarsih taking the first game 15-10 and Eliza and Resiana Zelin taking the second 15-11. In the thrid game, Finarsih suffered a sever cramp in her left leg, forcing her and partner Lili Tampi to retire from the match. Eliza and Zelin were then awarded the ladies' doubles title. In the mixed doubles final, Heryanto Trikus and Minarti Timur of Indonesia took advantage of the absence of Gil Young-ah to beat Kim Dong-moon and Kim Shin-young of South Korea 15-9 13-18 15-12. Kim Dong-moon is usually paired with Gil Young-ah and the two Koreans have had a recent string of victories over Trikus and Timur. END
