                        RASHID WINS, BUT NOT PARK
                                       
   SEOUL: Rashid Sidek opened his campaign in the Ciba Asia Cup badminton
   championships with a comfortable 15-6, 15-12 win over Indonesian
   youngster Jeffer Rossobin in a Group B match here last night.
   
   The second seeded Rashid, who won the title in 1991, will now take on
   reigning world junior champion Chen Gang of China for a place in the
   semi-finals.
   
   While Rashid picked up a win, top seed Park Sung-woo of South Korea
   and Hermawan Susanto of Indonesia were beaten in their opening
   matches.
   
   Sung-woo was beaten 6-15, 8-15 by China's Xie Yangchun while Hermawan
   lost 14-17, 7-15 to Chinese Luo Yigang, a finalist at the Asian
   Badminton Confederation (ABC) Championships.
   
   Wira Tangkis professionals Soo Beng Kiang-Tan Kim Her continued their
   poor run in international competitions when they were beaten 9-15,
   9-15 by South Korea's Yoo Yong-sung-Kim Dong-moon in their opening
   Group A men's doubles match.

SEOUL: Ong Ewe Hock took the cue from his Nusa Mahsuri teammate,
   Rashid Sidek, when he won his opening Group D match at the Ciba Asia
   Cup last night.
   
   The world number 18 picked an emphatic 15-7, 15-6 win over South
   Korean Hwang Sun-ho to put himself in contention for a place in the
   last four.
   
   Ewe Hock takes on Taiwan's Fung Permadi in a match that will decide
   the semi-finalist from the group. Fung had defeated Sun-ho in his
   opening match on Wednesday.
   
   Rashid's chances of making the semi-finals received a boost last night
   although the 28-year-old shuttler did not see action.
   
   Indonesian Jeffer Rossobin, who lost in straight games to Rashid in
   the opening match, defeated reigning world junior champion Chen Gang
   of China 15-7, 9-15, 15-12 last night.
   
   With the surprise result, Rashid needs to take only one game off Chen
   Gang in his Group B match tonight to make the semi-finals.
   
   Rashid, who won the title in 1991, is looking for a good run in the
   Asia Cup to redeem himself after the Thomas Cup disappointment.
   
   China's Xie Yangchun is the first player to book his place in the last
   four.
   
   Yangchun, who upset top seed Park Sung-woo of South Korea in his
   opening match, followed it up with a 15-9, 9-15, 15-12 win over
   Indonesia's Hendrawan last night.
   
   In the men's doubles competition, the challenge from Soo Beng
   Kiang-Tan Kim Her came to an early end.
   
   The Wira Tangkis duo crashed to their second consecutive defeat when
   they were beaten 15-7, 6-15, 8-15 by Indonesia's Tony Gunawan-Rudy
   Wijaya.
   
   Beng Kiang-Kim Her had lost to South Korea's Yoo Yong-sung-Kim
   Dong-moon in their opening match.
