THOMAS & UBER CUPS FINALS: SOME INDON PLAYERS MAY NOT GO BACK HOME

May 21, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - According to reliable sources close to the Indonesian team who are here in Hong Kong for the Thomas and Uber Cups Finals, several players may decide to stay in Hong Kong or to fly to other countries after the tournament ends. These players, who are mostly from the Chinese minority in Indonesia, want to avoid the dangerous political and racial situation now prevailing in Indonesia and are looking at their options.

These players though indicate that, if they do decide not to go home after the Finals, they will only be staying away temporarily and will return home when things settle down.

Some of the options that these players are looking at include staying in Hong Kong, flying to Singapore, heading to the U.S.A. for the U.S. Open, and going to Europe or Australia.

According to one top player, they will be forced to stay away from home for a while specially if they fail in their defense of the Thomas Cup, and that this thought is giving them more incentive to win tomorrow against China and on Sunday against either Denmark or Malaysia.
