SINGAPORE KONICA OPEN: GADE BEATS ARBI; LUO, ZHANG AND ZHANG FALL

August 13, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Current men's singles world number one Peter Gade of Denmark recovered from a first game setback in today's third round action at the Singapore Konica Open and beat Heryanto Arbi, the 1995 world champion from Indonesia, 13-15, 15-5 and 15-13. With his win, the top-seeded Dane advanced to the quarterfinals.

Second seed Sun Jun of China defeated Roslin Hashim of Malaysia 15-13 and 1503 to keep pace with Gade.

Third seed Luo Yigang of China did not fare as well. He was upended by Wong Choon Hann of Malaysia 4-15, 15-12 and 10-15.

In men's doubles, the second seeds Zhang Wei and Zhang Jun from China were the victims of another upset. Zhang and Zhang were defeated by Limpele Flandy and Hian Eng of Indonesia 13-15, 15-17 and 5-15.

Fifth seeds Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah of Malaysia also were upended. They lost to 1998 U.S. Open champions Horng Shin-Jeng and Lee Wei-Jen of Taiwan 15-4, 13-15 and 12-15.
