COPENHAGEN MASTERS: WORLD NUMBER ONES TO COMPETE

December 24, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Twenty-four of the world's best badminton players will be competing in Copenhagen, Denmark from December 27 to December 29 in the all-star invitational Copenhagen Masters tournament for 340,000 Danish krone (about 53,000 US Dollars) in prize money. World men's singles number one Peter Gade and women's singles number one Camilla Martin, both of Denmark, head the list of invited players which also include world men's singles number two Sun Jun of China, women's singles number three Mia Audina Tjiptawan and men's doubles world champion Chandra Wijaya, both of Indonesia, and current men's doubles number two Simon Archer and Chris Hunt of England.

Women's doubles world champions and number ones Ge Fei and Gu Jun of China and the mixed doubles number one pair of Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen of Denmark are not playing because the women's and mixed doubles events are not included at the year-end tournament being held in central Copenhagen at the Cirkusbygningen. Sogaard though will be competing in the men's doubles event.

The players scheduled to compete are:

Men's Singles
Peter Gade (Denmark), Sun Jun (China), Yong Hock Kin (Malaysia), Poul-Erik Hoyer (Denmark), Tomas Johansson (Sweden), Heryanto Arbi (Indonesia)
Women's Singles
Camilla Martin (Denmark), Mia Audina Tjiptawan (Indonesia), Zhang Ning (China), Kelly Morgan (Wales), Mette Sorensen (Denmark), Zeng Yaqiong (China)
Men's Doubles
Simon Archer/Chris Hunt (England), Jens Eriksen/Jesper Larsen (Denmark), Zhang Wei/Zhang Jun (China), Chandra Wijaya/Tony Gunawan (Indonesia), Pang Cheh Chang/Cheah Soon Thoe (Malaysia), Michael Sogaard/Jim Laugessen (Denmark)

The players will be split into two pools of three entries in each event and will play the other two entries in their pool. The pool winners will then clash in the finals on December 29.
