April 6, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Fung Permadi of Taiwan, currently listed as the world's number two in badminton men's singles, crashed out of the five-star Japan Open championships in Tokyo today. Permadi who had won the men's singles title in this year's first two major tournaments was thrashed by Boonsak Polsana, a 17-year old Thai player in straight sets 11-15 and 8-15.

Permadi's game was off, specially at the net and the young Thai player took full advantage of Permadi's poor form by being aggressive in the front court.

World number one Peter Gade of Denmark fared much better than Permadi. He put out Thailand's Anupap Thiraratsakul 15-7 and 15-12. Gade who had flown in only on Sunday used the match to fine-tune his game and was trying out some shots in the second set.

Defending world champion Peter Rasmussen of Denmark who must reach the fourth round of this tournament if he is to defend his world title at the upcoming world championships this May moved closer to this goal by winning his first round match against Shuichi Nakao of Japan 15-7 and 15-5.

China's Sun Jun, winner of the World Grand Prix Finals last February, also moved into the next round with a 15-8 and 15-7 victory over Takaaki Taniuchi of Japan.

The USA's Ardy Wiranata, a transplanted Indonesian who has won the Japan Open men's singles title three times, beat Hideki Furukawa of Japan 15-9 and 15-3. Wiranata next plays former teammate Heryanto Arbi, the 1995 world champion who defeated Keishi Kawaguchi of Japan 15-8 and 15-4.
