World Championships: Danish Fab Five Gain Quarterfinals

May 20, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Host Denmark's fabulous five men's singles aces all won their round-of-16 matches this evening to book 5 of the 8 places in the men's singles quarterfinals of the 1999 world individual championships of badminton for their country. World number one Peter Gade led the way when he trounced Yong Hock Kin of Malaysia 15-9 and 15-3 this evening. Defending world champion Peter Rasmussen gained his spot in the elite eight when he survived a tough three-setter against Chen Gang of China and won the match after a third-set tiebreak 3-15, 15-6 and 17-15.

Olympic champion Poul-Erik Hoyer put out Rashid Sidek of Malaysia 15-6 and 15-6, Kenneth Jonassen defeated Budi Santoso of Indonesia 15-11, 10-15 and 15-6, and Thomas Stuer beat Keita Masuda of Japan 17-14 and 15-5.

Indonesia's Hendrawan eliminated Ardy Wiranata of the USA 15-13 and 15-10, while Fung Permadi of Taiwan beat Wong Choon Hann of Malaysia 15-7 and 15-7.

Second seed Sun Jun of China defeated Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in a late three-set match 7-15, 15-6 and 15-6 to claim the last spot in the men's singles quarterfinals.

In women's singles, Kelly Morgan of Wales, conqueror of world champion and top seed Ye Zhaoying in the first round, continued to move ahead. She beat Ella Karachkova of Russia 11-6 and 11-1 late this afternoon to book a spot in the quarterfinals.

Second seed Gong Ruina of China also won as did third seed Camilla Martin of host Denmark. Gong Ruina beat Mette Pedersen of Denmark 11-3 and 11-5, while Martin put out Kim Ji Hyun of Korea 11-6 and 11-1.

Gong Zhichao, silver medalist last time around, was eliminated by Cindana of Indonesia 9-11, 11-4 and 6-11.
