Dutch Open: Mia Fades In Final

October 3, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Mia Audina, the former Indonesian badminton star who is now playing for the Netherlands, today faded in the second and third sets of the women's singles final of the Dutch Open badminton championships and was beaten by Chinese rookie Tang Chunyu. Audina, who yesterday upended top seed Zhou Mi of China, had taken the opening set from Tang in a tiebreak 13-11 but she did not have enough to cope with the Chinese player in the next two stanzas.

Audina, already hampered by a hamstring injury, began to lose length on her clears and Tang was able to capitalize on the Dutch-Indonesian player's drop in form to take the second and third sets 11-4 and 11-7.

Audina, winner of a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, was playing in her first international tournament since March.

In the all-Chinese men's singles final, Xia Xuanze upended top seed Ji Xinpeng 15-10 and 15-13.

Chinese players took two other Dutch Open titles. Chen Lin and Jiang Xuelian won the women's doubles championship. Chen Lin also captured the mixed doubles crown with partner Chen Qiqiu.

Chen and Jiang defeated compatriots Tang Chunyu and Zhou Mi in the women's doubles final 15-9 and 15-4. In the mixed doubles title contest, Chen Lin and Chen Qiqiu bested fifth seeds Martin Lundgaard Hansen and Pernille Harder of Denmark 15-11, 9-15 and 15-10.

Men's doubles top seeds Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah of Malaysia lived up to their top billing, albeit with some difficulty against the Danish team of Martin Lundgaard Hansen and Lars Paaske in the final. Choong and Lee were taken to three sets by the Danes before they could finalize their claim to the Dutch Open men's doubles title with a 15-4, 6-15 and 15-9 victory.
