OLYMPIC HOPEFULS ON PINS AND NEEDLES April 4, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - Badminton players who barely missed making the Olympic qualifying list released by the International Badminton Federation yesterday are anxiously awaiting the roster of additional qualifiers expected in the next few weeks. In the list issued yesterday, there were 16 players who made the grade in two or more events, led by Canadian veteran and all-arounder Denyse Julien who has the distinction of being the only player to qualify in three events - women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Because of these multiple qualifying entries, at least 16 more players may be added to the qualifying list since the badminton federation intends to field the maximum of 192 competitors allocated to the sport for the Atlanta Olympic Games. More vacant Olympic Games berths may also occur if a player on the qualified roster cannot meet his National Olympic Committee's standards. The distribution of the vacancies among the 5 events is up to the International Badminton Federation. An unofficial list of players who will be on pins and needles awaiting the supplementary qualifying roster are: Men's Singles ============= Jaimie Dawson - Canada Tan Sian Peng - Singapore Hans Sperre - Norway Women's Singles =============== Elena Nosdran - Ukraine Chan Chia Fong - Malaysia Katarzyna Krazowska - Poland Men's Doubles ============= Michael Helber (with Michael Keck who has already qualified in mixed doubles) - Germany Siripong Siripol and Khunakorn Sudhisodhi -Thailand Uwe Ossenbrink and Kai Mitteldorf - Germany He Tim and Chan Siu Kwong - Hong Kong Women's Doubles =============== Eline Coene (with Erica van den Heuvel who has already qualified in mixed doubles) - Netherlands Aiko Miyamura and Akiko Miyamura - Japan Diana Koleva (with Neli Nedjalkova who has already qualified in women's singles) - Bulgaria Maria Bengtsson and Margit Borg - Sweden Mixed Doubles ============= Jens Eriksen (with Helene Kirkegaard who has already qualified in women's doubles) - Denmark He Tim and Chan Oi Ni - Hong Kong Kai Mitteldorf (with Katrin Schmidt who has already qualified in women's doubles) - Germany Rhonda Cator (with Peter Blackburn who has already qualified in men's doubles) - Australia Vladislav Druzchenko and Victoria Evtouchenko - Ukraine COPYRIGHT 1996 by D.
