26 MORE PLAYERS ADDED TO OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS (Following is a corrected report replacing the article entitled "25 MORE PLAYERS ADDED ....") April 12, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - The International Badminton Federation earlier today made 26 badminton players happy by including their names on an updated list of Olympic qualifiers. These 26 players who had barely missed making the first list were addded as there were 14 athletes on the first list who had qualified for two events and 1 who qualified for three events plus another group of 9 who had qualified for one event and who were on the so-called reserve list for another event. In addition, one athlete, He Tim of Hong Kong, was a lucky reserve for two events. The badminton federation allocated these duplicated berths such that both singles events have 41 qualifiers each and the doubles events 22 pairs apiece. Another 6 slots are available for so-called wild-card entries to be assigned by the International Olympic Committee together with the badminton federation to entries from countries with small Olympic delegations and no badminton qualifiers but are active in badminton. Some more berths may become available as those on the qualifying list still have to obtain approval from their respective National Olympic Committees to participate in the Olympics. Injuries to qualifiers may also create some vacancies. The new Olympic qualifiers are: Men's Singles ============= Jaimie Dawson - Canada Iain Sydie (already qualified in men's doubles) - Canada Tan Sian Peng - Singapore Deepankar Bhattacharya - India Nicholas Hall - New Zealand Dariusz Zieba - Poland Hans Sperre - Norway Fumihiko Machida - Japan Women's Singles =============== Elena Nosdran - Ukraine Yang Song - Australia Katarzyna Krasowska - Poland Heike Schonharting - Germany Sandra Dimbour - France Chan Chia Fong - Malaysia Elsa Nielsen - Iceland Amparo Lim - Philippines Men's Doubles ============= Michael Helber and Michael Keck (already qualified in mixed doubles) - Germany Siripong Siripool and Khunakorn Sudhisodhi - Thailand Chan Siu Kwing and He Tim - Hong Kong Women's Doubles =============== Elena Rybkhina and Marina Yakusheva (both already qualified in women's singles) - Russia Eline Coene and Erica van den Heuvel (already qualifed in mixed doubles) - Netherlands Aiko Miyamura and Aikiko Miyamura - Japan Mixed Doubles ============= Peter Axelsson (already qualified in men's doubles) and Catrine Bengtsson (already qualified in women's singles) - Sweden Jens Eriksen and Helene Kirkegaard (already qualified in women's doubles) - Denmark Chan Oi Ni and He Tim (already a new qualifier in men's doubles) - Hong Kong Kai Mitteldorf and Katrin Schmidt (already qualified in mixed doubles) - Germany COPYRIGHT 1996 by D.Shuttlenws@genie.com.
