INDONESIA SHUT OUT OF TOP BADMINTON RANKINGS Chinese Dragons Take Three Top Spots May 10, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - For the first time since the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, there are no Indonesians at the top of the International Badminton Federation rankings in any of the five events in the sport. The badminton federation released the latest rankings earlier today in Cheltenham, England. The resurgent Chinese "dragons" have come back strongly after poor years in 1992, 1993 and 1994 to grab three number one positions in the IBF rankings. Dong Jiong now occupies the top spot in men's singles, displacing Joko Suprianto of Indonesia. Suprianto is now world number two, followed by Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen of Denmark at number three. Ye Zhaoying continues to be the top-rated player in women's singles, followed by Bang Soo Hyun of Korea. Susi Susanti of Indonesia has slipped to number three and is the lone Indonesian in the top ten. Ge Fei and Gu Jun have taken over the top position in women's doubles from world champions Gil Young Ah and Jang Hye Ock of Korea. Sitting at number three are Qin Yiyuan and Tang Yongshu of China followed by Chen Ying and Peng Xingyong. Malaysia and Korea occupy the other top positions in the rankings. In men's doubles, Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock of Malaysia have displaced world champions Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky of Indonesia and now are the world number one men's doubles team. Ranked third are Huang Zhanzhong and Jiang Xin of China. The Danish tandem of Jon Holst-Christensen and Thomas Lund are at the fourth position. In mixed doubles, the near-legend Park Joo Bong of Korea and partner Ra Kyung Min continue to hold the top spot followed by the Indonesians Trikus Heryanto and Minarti Timur. Two Chinese duos follow at the third and fourth spots: Chen Xingdong and Peng Xingyong, and Liu Jianjun and Sun Man. These rankings reflect the recent successes of the players that have moved up the rankings. The badminton federation ranking system puts more value to more recent tournaments and less value to more time- distant events and actually drops results from competitions that took place 12 or months in the past. Because of this time-valuing system, rankings change even in a month like this past April when most of the top players were not competing: old results were either dropped from consideration or reduced in value. The badminton federation rankings follow (Top 50 in singles and top 25 in doubles events). MENS'S SINGLES 1. Dong Jiong - China 310.42 points 2. Joko Suprianto - Indonesia 308.90 3.
