RASHID SIDEK BAGS ASIA CUP SINGLES CROWN June 23, 1996 (D.SHUTTLENWS) - Rashid Sidek of Malaysia finally won a badminton tournament title this year when he defeated Luo Yigang of China 18-14 15-5 in the men's singles finals of the Asia Cup competition in Seoul, Korea today. This was the Malaysian's third final of 1996. In January, he was the losing finalist at the Taipei Open and in March, he was defeated by Poul-Erik Hoyer Larsen of Denmark in the All-England championships. Sidek's win though is somewhat hollow as the top Indonesians and Chinese players did not participate in the Asia Cup this year because of its closeness to the all-important Olympic Games. In the women's singles final, Zhang Ning of China came back from a badly played first game to beat compatriot Zheng Yaqing 5-11 11-2 11-4. Yoo Yung Sung and Kim Dong Moon of Korea took the men's doubles crown with their 15-10 15-8 victory over Tony Gunawan and Rudy Wijaya of Indonesia. Koreans Gil Young Ah and Jang Hye Ock beat Indarti Isolina and Denyana Lomban of Indonesia 15-7 15-8 to claim the women's doubles top prize, while compatriots Park Joo Bong and Ra Kyung Min rolled to another mixed doubles crown with an untroubled 15-6 15-8 win over fellow Koreans Kang Kung Jin and Kim Mee Hyang.
