OLYMPIC GAMES: BADMINTON - DAY 5 RESULTS SINGLES TOPSEED SUPRIANTO AND YE UPSET - INDONESIA VERSUS MALAYSIA IN MEN'S DOUBLES SEMIS July 28, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - The topseeds in singles competition, Joko Suprianto of Indonesia in men's singles and Ye Zhaoying of China in women's singles, were eliminated in today's quarterfinal action at the Atlanta Olympic Games. Rashid Sidek of Malaysia defeated Suprianto 15-5 15-12. Sidek who has been playing exceptionally well at this competition was too quick for the 30-year old Indonesian and covered the court well, preventing Suprianto from scoring on his favorite angled smashes and drops to the sidelines. Men's singles second seed, Poul Erik Hoyer-Larsen of Denmark, also played well as he defeated the defending Olympic gold medalist, Allan Budi Kusuma, 15-5 and 15-9. Dong Jiong of China, the current world number one, and Heryanto Arbi, the world champion, also won their quarterfinal matches. Sidek and Dong will face off in one semifinal match and Hoyer-Larsen and Arbi will contest the other. In women's singles, Kim Ji Hyun of Korea defeated topseed and world champion, Ye Zhaoying, 11-5 and 12-11 as the world champion's game again collapsed under the pressure of an important match. In this year's All-England final, Ye was defeated in embarassing fashion and in the world women's team championships finals (the Uber Cup) in late May, she lost to Susi Susanti after being in a seemingly winning position. Defending Olympic gold medalist Susi Susanti won her match against Han Jingna of China, while silver medalist Bang Soo Hyun beat Yao Yan of China. Indonesian teenaged ace, Mia Audina defeated Camilla Martin of Denmark in a tight three-gamer to take the fourth semifinal berth. Audina will meet Kim in one semifinal, while Susanti and Bang face off in the other semifinal match. In men's doubles, teams from archrivals Indonesia and Malaysia prevailed in their quarterfinal matches to set up two Indonesia versus Malaysia semifinals. Topseeds Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja of Indonesia beat the Chinese pair of Huang Zhanzhong and Jiang Xin 15-7 and 15-7 while compatriots Antonius and Denny Kantono, seeded 3/4, won their match against Andreij Antropov and Nikolaj Zuev of Russia 15-5 and 15-1. Second seeds Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock of Malaysia had a first game scare against the Koreans Ha Tae Kwon and Kang Kyung Jin who fought point for point before the Malaysians prevailed 18-17. In the second, the Malaysians had a slightly easier time, winning 15-8. THe unseeded Soo Beng Kiang and Tan Kim Her eliminated Britain's last contender, Simon Archer and Chris Hunt, 15-5 and 15-12. Soo and Tan will meet the topseeds in one semifinal. Cheah and Yap will battle Antonius and Kantono in the other. In women's doubles quarterfinal play, the top 4 seeds all won to book their places in the semifinals. Topseeds Gil Young Ah and Jang Hye Ock of Korea will meet 3/4 seeds Qin Yiyuan and tang Yongshu of China in one semifinal. Second seeds Ge Fei and Gu Jun of China battle Danes Helene Kirkegaard and Rikke Olsen in the other semifinal.
