OLYMPICS: BADMINTON - DAY 6 MORNING RESULTS CHINA VERSUS KOREA IN MIXED SEMIS - RICKY AND REXY INTO FINALS July 29, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - Two Chinese and two Korean pairs beat their opponents in today's mixed doubles quarterfinals to set up China versus Korea semifinals at the Atlanta Olympic Games. Topseeds Park Joo Bong and Ra Kyung Min of Korea defeated the 5/8 seeds from China, Tao Xioaqiang and Wang Xiaoyuan, in typical Park Joo Bong fashion, 15-7 and 15-9. Liu Jianjun and Sun Man of China of China, seeded 3/4, beat the unseeded pair of Nimpele Flandy and Rosalina Riseu of Indonesia in a match of changing momentums. The Chinese took the first game easily 15-2 but then dropped the second 5-15. After the five-minute break, the Chinese came back to beat the Indonesians 15-7. Another Chinese pair, Chen Xingdong and Peng Xingyong, also seeded 3/4, eliminated the last European mixed doubles medal hopes, Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen of Denmark, in a tight match. Chen and Peng faced a determined and sometimes combative Danish pair in Sogaard and Olsen. The two pairs split the first two games and battled to a 13-all tie in the decider. Chen and Peng then won the five-point tiebreak or setting 5-2 (or 18-15) to take the semifinal berth. The match was marred by a confrontation between Sogaard and the tiny Peng, the female player on the Chinese pairing. Sogaard had been upset by a line call that had gone against the Danes. Previous to the line call, he had been complaining about the time that Peng had been taking to serve. The last semifinal spot went to Koreans Kim Dong Moon and Gil Young Ah who upset the second seeds, Trikus Heryanto and Minarti Timur of Indonesia, 15-4 and 15-13 with their better positional play. Park and Ra will meet Liu and Sun in one semifinal match, while Kim and Gil will face Chen and Peng in the other. In men's doubles, the topseeded pair of Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja of Indonesia defeated the unseeded Malaysians Soo Beng Kiang and Tan Kim Her with ease, 15-3 and 15-5. With their win, Mainaky and Subgaja assure themselves of at least a silver medal and a good chance at an Olympic gold medal. They will face the winner of the Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock and Antonius- Kantono semifinal match. Soo and Tan will play the loser of the other semifinal for the bronze medal.
