BADMINTON FEDERATION TO EXPERIMENT AT DUTCH OPEN August 30, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - Sources close to the International Badminton Federation today said that the badminton federation would be trying out a scoring system different from the one currently in effect. This experiment will be carried out at this year's P&H Dutch Open in s'Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. The tournament is to run from October 2 to October 6. Badminton matches are usually best of three games affairs with each game going to 15 points (or 11 points for women's singles). The scoring system which will be tried is called 5x9 - matches will be best of 5 games with each game going to 9 points. The experiment in the new scoring system is part of the badminton federation's research and efforts on improving the appeal and presen- tation of the sport, specially in the American and European areas. Other experiments that may be carried out in the near future will include the use of brightly coloured shuttles. 5x9 scoring has been tried in the past 3 years at various local and regional competitions, particularly in Norway. The experiment at the Dutch Open is the first time the system will be tried at a Grand Prix event, badminton's top-of-the-line competition circuit. NEW SHUTTLENWS (e-mail: n.shuttlenws@genie.com)
