AMERICANS BEST CANADIANS IN PANAM UNDER-19S by Mike Grossman (from a report supplied by Paul Pawlaczyk) September 18, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - A team of American junior badminton players defeated their Canadian counterparts, 3 matches to 2, to claim the under-19 team title at the Pan American Junior badminton championships held in in San Juan, Puerto Rico September 8 to 14. The Canadians started off well in the team finals with a mixed doubles win by Bill Millroy and Lindy Van Riker over David Welch and Karen Chou 15-11 15-7. Katie Maloney pulled the Americans even with her girl's singles victory over Caroline Spiers 11-2 11-0. In the third match, a men's singles setto, American Howard Bach and Canadian Bobby Millroy battled for three games. Bach won the first from Millroy 15-9. Millroy came back to win the second game 15-7. In the third game, the Canadian had Bach in trouble. Millroy was poised to win, with a 13-8 lead over a tired Bach, when the powerful winds of hurricane Hortense knocked the electricity out. After a two-hour break, play resumed with a well-rested Bach. The American junior climbed back from a 8-13 deficit to beat Millroy 17-14. In the fourth match, the Canadian girls' doubles pair of Lindy Van Riker and Caroline Spiers took the first game from Katie Maloney and Karen Chou 15-7. Maloney and Chou battled back to win the second and third games 15-8 and 15-9 and clinched the team title for the U.S.A. In the meaningless fifth match, Canadians Andrew Dabecka and Bill Millroy defeated Bach and David Welch 15-7 15-10 to complete the team scoring at 3 matches to 2 in favor of the Americans. In individual medal competition, Howard Bach of the U.S.A. defeated Andrew Dabecka of Canada 15-8 15-11 in the under-19 men's singles finals. Bobby and Bill Millroy of Canada beat Howard Bach and David Welch of the U.S.A. 13-15 15-6 15-8 in the under-19 men's doubles finals.
