PERMADI ELIMINATES STUER-LAURIDSEN AT U.S. OPEN Suprianto Survives Against Ong by Mike Grossman (from a report filed by J. Chang) September 26, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - The sixth-seeded Indonesian expatriate Fung Permadi who now carries the colors of the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association defeated the fourth-seeded Thomas Stuer- Lauridsen of Denmark 8-15 15-8 and 15-12 in a men's singles quarterfinal match. Fung's victory eliminated the lanky Dane from the running at the badminton U.S. Open in Orange, California. Top seed Joko Suprianto survived a tough quarterfinal match against Ong Ewe Hock of Malaysia. Suprianto had opened the scoring with a 15-8 first game but seemed out of the match in the second and early part of the third while the fifth-seeded Malaysian player lived up to his reputation of playing up (or down) to his opponent and brought up his level of play. Suprianto dropped the second game to Ong, scoring a meagre 3 points and was behind 0-5 in the third. Suprianto then changed the pace and began to play a more offensive style, concentrating his smash attack to Ong's backhand. The Indonesian managed to crwal back into the contest, knotting things up at 6-6 and 8-8. Ong battled back to take a 12-10 lead before the veteran Indonesian scored 5 points in a row to claim victory at 15-12. Second-seed Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen of Denmark, the 1996 Olympic gold medalist had a much easier time against the Indonesian youngster Budi Santoso, disposing of the tenth-seed 15-11 and 15-6. Third-seeded Rashid Sidek of Malaysia also had an easier match against twelfth-seeded Hwang Sun Ho of Korea, winning 15-5 and 15-7. In tomorrow's men's singles semifinals, Suprianto will face Permadi while Hoyer-Larsen and Sidek will tangle in the other match. In women's singles, all four top seeds had short days at the office. Mia Audina of Indonesia, seeded first, breezed past Kara Solmundsen of Canada 11-2 and 11-0. Second-seed Camilla Martin of Denmark disposed of Chinese expatriate Cindy Shi 11-4 and 11-4. Third-seed Meiluawati of Indonesia beat sixth-seed Debra O'Connor of Trinidad 11-7 and 11-1, while Canadian veteran Denyse Julien lived up to her number four seeding with a quick 11-2 and 11-1 win over Kim Sun Suk of Korea. Audina will meet Julien in the women's single semifinals with Martin and Meiluawati playing each other in the other matchup. In men's doubles, top-seeds Denny Kantono and Antonius had a battle on their hands against a determined Malaysian pairing of Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah in their quarterfinals. The two pairs exchanged overtime wins in the first two games. The Indonesian team squeezed out an 18-14 first game win. The seventh- seeded Malaysians fought back in the second to win 18-16. In the third game, Antonius defused the strong Malaysian smash attack with excellent short serving and net play, allowing his side to unleash their own effective smashes. The Indonesians raced to a 13-1 lead on Antonius' serve and then closed out the Malaysians at 15-2. Second-seeds Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock of Malaysia eliminated the 5-seeds from England, Chris Hunt and Simon Archer, 15-9 and 15-1. The third-seeded pair, Tony Gunawan and Rudy Wijaya of Indonesia, were upended by the eighth-seeds, Ha Tae Kwon and Kim Dong Mun of Korea, in two overtime or tie-breaker games, 14-18 and 17-18.
