Park's dramatic 15-11 15-0 defeat of Kusuma started a series of upsets that left six Chinese and two South Koreans -- but none of the sport's usually dominant Indonesians -- in contention for Friday's semi-finals. Park, seeded seventh, never let his concentration slip as he came back from an early four-point deficit to dominate an off-form Kusuma. "It's like a warning for Indonesia," Kusuma said. "Before, it was always Indonesian players that got the victories. But now, step by step, the other countries are improving." Park's victory also ended the singles title hopes of an inexperienced Indonesian team weakened by a decision to keep top players at home in preparation for May's world championships. Chinese players Sun Jun, Ge Chang and Dong Jiong all powered through to the men's semi-finals in straight games. In the women's quarter-finals, unseeded 19-year-old Wang Chen of China, the current world junior champion and quarterfinalist at the recent All-England championships, continued to make her mark with an emphatic 11-6 11-4 victory over number two seed Ra Kyung-min of South Korea. Wang's compatriot Yao Yan, also unseeded, upset number four seed Lee Joo-hyun 11-6 4-11 11-5. Top-seeded Bang Soo-hyun of South Korea beat Zhang Ning of China 11-6 11-0 to qualify for the women's semifinals. ASIAN BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS - SEEMIFINALS Host Chinese Dominate Semifinals April 7 - Unseeded Yao Yan of the host country China exploded into the limelight by beating top seed Bang Soo-hyun of South Korea in the women's singles semifinals of the Asian Badminton Championships in Beijing on Thursday. The upset win by the 21-year old from the southwestern province of Guangxi ensured an all-Chinese final for the women with her 5-11 11-7 11-3 victory in front of an ecstatic home crowd. Yan will face compatriot Ye Zhaoying in the final on Saturday. Number-three seed Ye beat 19-year old Wang Chen of China 11-4 4-11 11-7. In the men's singles semifinals, a disciplined defence by seventh-seeded Park Sung-woo of South Korea overcame the fierce attacking play of China's Dong Jiong. Sixth-seed Dong's powerful smashes became increasingly erratic despite enthusiastic support from the Beijing crowd and Park won 18-16 15-12. Park, who sent Indonesia's Olympic champion and top seed Allan Budi Kusuma crashing out of the quarter-finals on Thursday, will face fifth-seeded Sun Jun of China in the finals. Sun beat compatriot Ge Cheng 15-7 15-6. In a men's doubles semifinal, second-seeded Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock of Malaysia powered their way to a 15-6 15-8 victory over Indonesia's Chandra Wijaya and Ade Sutrisna. Cheah and Yap will meet the Chinese tandem of Huang Zhanzhong and Jiang Xin in the finals. The loss by Wijaya and Sutrisna ended any title hopes of the Indonesian team weakened by a decision to keep top players at home in preparation for the world championships scheduled for late May in Switzerland. Officials of other teams said Indonesia would have dominated the tournament if their top players had taken part. Other finals matchups are all-Chinese affairs. In the ladies' doubles, world number one pair Ge Fei and Gu Jun face Qin Yiyuan and Tang Yongshu, and in mixed doubles, Jiang Xin and Zhang Jin will play against Liu Jianjun and Ge Fei. ASIAN BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS - FINALS Park, Cheah and Yap Stop Host China Sweep April 8 - Park Sung Woo of South Korea and the pair of Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock defeated their Chinese opponents in their respective finals to deny the host country a rare sweep of the Asian badminton championships. China, bolstered by the absence of Indonesia's top players and the presence of Chinese contenders in each of the five event finals, had hoped for a sweep that would firmly establish it once more as a powerhouse in the sport. Howeever, Park Sung-woo, the tigerish singles specialist from South Korea played spoiler as he defeated Chinese hope Sun Jun in two games 15-8 15-8. The Malaysian men's doubles team of Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock, fresh from a semifinals placing at the prestigious All-England championships in March, further spoiled China's day by beating Huang Zhanzhong and Jiang Xin. The Chinese pair took the first game 15-7 to the crowd's delight. In the second and third games, the newish combination of Cheah and Yap started to click with Cheah supplying the backcourt power and Yap controlling the net. The Malaysians took the last two games 15-8 15-7 and served notice that they will be a force to contend with at the world championships scheduled for late May in Switzerland. In an all-Chinese ladies' singles final, Chinese champion Ye Zhaoying taught compatriot Yao Yan a lesson in the event. She allowed the unseeded surprise finalist to score only two points in the match, winning 11-2 11-0. In the ladies' doubles finals, top-seeds and world number ones Ge Fei and Gu Jun of China whipped compatriots Qin Yiyuan and Tang Yongshu 15-1 15-4. Ge Fei also won a second gold medal as she teamed up with Liu Jianjun in mixed doubles to defeat Jiang Xin and Zhang Jin in a three game match 15-4 12-15 15-5.
