FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 28, 1996 INDONESIA ROLLS AT $200,000 HONG TA SHAN U.S. OPEN BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS (ORANGE, Calif.) – It was all Indonesia today at the $200,000 1996 Hong Ta Shan U.S. Open Badminton Championships, as the world badminton juggernaut took 4 of 5 championship titles. Men’s doubles pair Chandra Wijaya and Sigit (Indonesia) got things off on the right foot by upsetting 1996 Olympic Silver medalists Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Him Hock (Malaysia) 18-16, 15-10. The Malaysians appeared flat from the outset tonight, with no pop on their smashes whatsoever. “We didn’t have our concentration tonight,” said Cheah. “The Indonesian’s are young and fast and we still were a bit tired after yesterday’s match.” Now it was 17-year-old Mia Audina to take center stage. A silver medalist at the 1996 Olympic Games, Audina fought off Denmark’s top gun Camilla Martin 11-5, 12-9 to take her first major tournament title. “I’m very happy to have my first tournament title,” said a triumphant Audina. “Hopefully there are many more to come in the future.” Indonesia’s third title came in men’s singles, as Joko Suprianto proved that he indeed deserves his No.1 world ranking, using his incredible consistency to knock off 1996 Olympic gold medalist Poul-Erik Hoyer -Larsen (Denmark) 15-13, 15-13. “Joko had good speed, and I made too many unforced errors tonight,” said Hoyer-Larsen in defeat. “This is my first match after the Olympic Games, but I am slowly coming back.” Third world ranked Rosiana and Eliza Zelin closed the deal for Indonesia with an easy 15-6, 15-5 victory over England’s Joanne Goode and Julie Bradbury.
