The tournament, part of the United States Badminton Association’s “Classics” series, featured 110 participants from 13 states. Newcomers Ben Wu and his sister, Becky, from Los Angeles, Calif., took the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively in two long matches. Ben tangled with Morten Auscher from Los Angeles, Calif., via Denmark, winning in two long games, 15-11, 15-10. Becky was tested by Colorado Springs, Colo., athlete, Kathy Zimmerman, defeating her in three games, 11-3, 9-12, 11-4. Women’s doubles was a hotly contested match, with Donna Beach and Andrea Edstrom (Colorado Springs, Colo.) doing battle with Californians Eileen Tang and Shannon Hsu. Beach and Edstrom prevailed in the end, 8-15, 15- 6, 17-14. Men’s doubles was no easier for Canadian Chris Trenholme and his partner, Morten Auscher, who fought valiantly through three games with Californians Ronny Oetomo and Trisna Gunadi. After serving for match point almost a dozen times in the third game, Trenholme and Auscher finally pulled out the victory 15-11, 10-15, 17-16. Gunadi and Tang took the mixed doubles title over the sibling tandem of Ben and Becky Wu, in another hard fought match, 18-17, 18-15. Local fans were not disappointed, as 15-year-old Kristin Artman of Fenton, MO, and 16-year-old David Sovar of Florissant, MO, teamed in junior mixed doubles, winning the event over two other teams in a round robin. Artman also had several convincing singles wins in her attempt to win the “B” women’s singles, losing in the finals to Jodie Harroun of Chicago, IL, 11-2, 11-9.
