FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 21, 1996 CHONG AND ZHAO DO IT AGAIN (COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) -- Andy Chong (Miami Lakes, Fla.) and Zhao Yeping (Gaithersburg, Md.) have been on fire this USBA Classic season, and that fire burned brighter than ever at the 1996 Pikes Peak Badminton Classic, as each athlete took home triple crowns respectively. Even more impressive is the fact that the duo has won 23 out of a possible 24 titles awarded on this year's USBA Classic Circuit. Chong began his championship barrage by defeating Canada's Chris Trenholme 18-15, 15-11 in the men's singles competition. Trenholme upset 1992 Olympian Ben Lee to advance to the finals, but there Chong was just too strong. Lee avenged his loss in singles by pairing with Chong and defeating hometown favorite Mike Edstrom (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Chris Hales 15-11, 15-11 in a real dogfight. "I was very impressed with the performance of Edstrom and Hales today," said Lee. "We beat them 15-7, 15-9 five months ago in Miami, so they're definitely improving." On the women's side, Zhao was equally as dominant, as she crushed Andrea Andersson in singles 11-1, 11-9. She then teamed with Andersson to defeat Shannon Hsu (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Eileen Tang (Chino, Calif.) 11-15, 15-10, 15-2 in a surprisingly difficult match. In mixed doubles, Chong and Zhao joined forces to defeat Edstrom and Andersson 15-11, 15-3. The Pikes Peak Classic is a National Team Qualifier and fourth jewel of the USBA Classic Series, America's National Grand Prix circuit for badminton. On the Circuit, the nations top badminton athletes compete in five regional tournaments for over $2000 in prize money.
