FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 18, 1996 CHINA BLASTS INDONESIA IN UBER CUP BADMINTON ACTION (COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) - China's womens badminton team sent a strong message to Indonesia today, as they throttled the 1994 Uber Cup champions 5-0, thus clinching a spot in the 1996 Uber Cup finals. Even more surprising than the lopsided victory was the fact that 1992 Indonesian Olympic gold medalist Susi Susanti was absent from the event. According to a report from Reuters, Indonesian Uber Cup manager Ewan Setiawan kept Susanti from competing due to her poor record against Chinese number one Ye Zhaoying. "Ye has beaten her three times in the last 12 months, so we rested her to save her from the pressure," said Setiawan. "She will be ready for the semifinals." In other Group A action, Japan blasted Russia 5-0. Currently tied with Indonesia for the second semifinals spot, the Japanese face an uphill battle, as they meet top seed China on Monday. South Korea looks like the team to beat in Group B, as they kept their unblemished record intact with a 5-0 victory over host Hong Kong. Denmark moved a step closer to semifinals qualification with a 4-1 victory over England. They will take the second spot in Group B with a victory over Hong Kong on Monday. The Thomas and Uber Cup (Hong Kong, May 16-26) are the men's and women's world team championships for badminton, held in conjunction every even year.
