FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 19, 1996 DENMARK, INDONESIA ROLL AT 1996 THOMAS CUP BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS (COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) - Denmark kept European hopes for a semifinalist at the 1996 Thomas Cup world team championships alive today with a 3-2 victory over South Korea. The victory gave the Danes two victories in Group B, but they are not assured a semifinal birth yet, as they will face a tough Malaysia team on Tuesday. Malaysia crushed Hong Kong today 5-0, and with a victory over the Danes would likely advance to the semis. In Group A action, 1994 Cup holders Indonesia assured themselves of a chance to repeat as champions by blasting Sweden 5-0. China will likely be the second representative from the group as they scored a 5-0 victory over struggling England. The Thomas and Uber Cup (Hong Kong, May 16-26) are the men's and women's world team championships for badminton, held in conjunction every even year.
