FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 20, 1996 SEMIFINALS SET FOR 1996 UBER CUP BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS (COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) - Both China and South Korea stormed into the 1996 Uber Cup semifinals today, as each nation posted 5-0 victories over Japan and England respectively. With the wins, the Asian powerhouses finished at the top of their respective pools with unblemished 3-0 records. South Korea will now take on Indonesia in a rematch of the 1994 Uber Cup semifinals, where the Indonesians won 4-1. The Indonesians will certainly not treat the Koreans lightly following their 3-2 upset victory over China in the Uber Cup Preliminaries earlier this year. In the second semifinal, top seed from Group A China will go for a record sixth Uber Cup title with victory over Denmark, who qualified for the final four for the first time since 1984. The Thomas and Uber Cup (Hong Kong, May 16-26) are the men's and women's world team championships for badminton, held in conjunction every even year.
