FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 24, 1996 LOCALS BOW OUT, TOP SEEDS COAST AT 1996 HONG TA SHAN U.S. OPEN (ORANGE,Calif.)—The party ended today for local Orange County badminton athletes, as they met the best in the world at the 1996 Hong Ta Shan U.S. Open. Shannon Hsu (Costa Mesa, Calif.), Hoang Ly (Orange, Calif.), Quyen Nguyen (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), and Djeelee Rantung (Lake Forest, Calif.) all lost in the opening round of the men’s and women’s singles competition. They will have a chance to redeem themselves tomorrow however, as the women’s and mixed doubles competitions kick off at the Orange County Badminton Club. Top seeds rolled as expected today, with Indonesia’s Joko Suprianto looking in top condition as he took out Brazil’s Guilhermo Pardo 15-1, 15-2. Other top seeds advancing to the round of 16 in men’s singles include 1996 Olympic bronze medalist Rashid Sidek of Malaysia and 1992 bronze medalist Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen of Denmark. Kevin Han (Colorado Springs, Colo.) remains the lone American left in the men’s singles competition, as he advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Guatemala’s Pedro Yang Ruiz 15-4, 15-12, and Mexico’s Roy Diaz Gonzalez 15-13, 17-16. Next in line for Han is Malaysia’s Ong Ewe Ock, who is currently ranked 11th in the world. The two will do battle tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. In women’s singles, Andrea Edstrom (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is the sole U.S. survivor, as she crushed Trinidad’s Sabrina Cassie 11-1, 11-1. Tomorrow she will have a showdown with Canada’s top gun Denyse Julien at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday’s competition will feature action in all five events, with play kicking off at 3:00 p.m. Tickets for tomorrow’s action are $5 General Admission.
