HBA TOURNAMENT RESULTS

OPEN TOURNAMENT

The Hertfordshire Open Tournament was held at Haberdasher Aske's Boys' School on Saturday 28th September, as arranged by the BA of E. Unfortunately the clash of this date with a Grand Prix Tournament reduced the number and restricted the range of entries. As a result the whole tournament was played over just one tiring but enjoyable day. In the largest event of the day, the Mens Doubles, Hertfordshire was well represented by four of the eight players in the semi-finals. The final was a hard three- setter, with all four players showing signs of fatigue from the day's exertions. Eventually the Essex/Herts pairing of Barry Francis and Chris Patten beat Brian Lockie and Jim Teale of Herts 15-11, 8-15, 15-5.
Hertfordshire was well represented in all five events, with Karina Bryant a double winner; and Chris Patten, Caroline Coombs and Brian Lockie all winners in one event and runners-up in another. In the Ladies Doubles Karina Bryant and Caroline Coombs proved the best pair, winning against the junior Herts/Norfolk players Helen Palmer and Susan Pennington, who are obviously a pair for the future.
In the Mens Singles final, Chris Patten met ex Herts player Greg Pollard, both players having come through tight matches to reach the final. The first set was very close, with Greg just winning 18-14. The hard game seemed to take more out of Chris, and Greg went on to take the second set and the title 15-7.

The Mixed Doubles provided Karina Bryant with her second title, when she and partner Brian Lockie beat Jim Teale and Lesley Caulkett (Brian's off-court partner) 15-11, 12-15, 15-8

The Ladies Singles was played on a round robin format with the two group winners meeting in a thrilling final. Lesley Paine from Sussex, an ex-junior star returning to competitive play after a break to attend university, proved slightly stronger - but only just - beating Caroline Coombs 10-12, 12-11, 11-6.

RESTRICTED TOURNAMENT

This season's Hertfordshire Restricted Tournament was held the following weekend, 5th and 6th October, at the Fearnhill Sports Centre, Letchworth. This was a new venue, moving the tournament out of its South Herts base.
The singles events were played on Saturday, with a plate event for first match losers in the Mens Singles. In a very high-class final, first seed Chris Patten battled against second seed Trevor Kernick. Chris, who had already come through two 3-set matches, eventually won the title again 15-17, 15-6, 15-4.

The Mens Singles Plate final was won for the third year running by Adam Skeggs, beating Les Pratt 15-1, 15-6. A special note should be made of the performance of junior Peter Gooden, who beat Adam Skeggs in the first round, and worked Chris Patten hard before losing to him in a good 3-setter.

As there were only three entries (where were you ladies?), the Ladies Singles was played on a round robin format, with Caroline Coombs winning the first of her three 1996 Restricted titles.

Chris Patten, singles winner, Trevor Kernick, finalist

The Mixed Doubles was the first event on the Sunday, and produced some of the best matches and surprises. The junior pair of Peter Gooden and Liza Parker produced probably the biggest of these when they beat the first seeds and newly-crowned Herts Open Mixed winners, Karina Bryant and Brian Lockie, in the third set. However, they were unable to repeat this in the final, losing 15-8, 15-6 to the more experienced players, Kevin Maughan and Caroline Coombs. The Plate event was won by Ed Lintott and Helen Skeggs (another Skeggs plate winner!), beating Malcolm Coombs and Kim Maughan 15-12, 15-5. The Mens Doubles on Sunday saw the first and second seeds meet in the final, which Brian Lockie and Jim Teale won 15-8, 15-4 against Nick Goode and Jason Large. The Plate event was won 15-2, 15-3 by Chris Davidson and Adam Skeggs (Skeggs again) against Peter Gooden and Ryan Sharman.
The Ladies Doubles produced the third title of the tournament for Caroline Coombs when she and Karina Bryant beat Liza Parker and Suzanne Rayappan 15-11, 15-6.

The Ladies Doubles Plate event was won - you guessed it! - by a Skeggs, when the scratch pair of Kirsten Morley and Helen Skeggs beat Mette Eriksen and Caroline Mazarelo 15-5, 15-4. This event was notable for the emergence of so much talent in the junior ladies. The future for Hertfordshire ladies looks rosy

Ladies Doubles winners, Karina Bryant & Caroline Coombs
On a more regrettable note, since I took over the tournament three seasons ago, I have been unable to locate the trophies for the mens singles, ladies singles, and mens doubles. I have now received a very kind offer to provide a new ladies singles trophy. If anyone knows the whereabouts of any of the missing trophies, or would like to supply replacements for the mens trophies, please contact me:

Thanks to Ashaway for their sponsorship of both the Open and Restricted tournaments.

VETERANS TOURNAMENT

The Hertfordshire Veterans tournament was held on Sunday 17th November at Haberdasher Aske's Boys' School.

COACHING NEWS

Club/League Coaching Course at Gosling Sports Park

Ashaway recently sponsored a club/league coaching course, enabling sixteen Herts players to enjoy 6 top-class coaching sessions from Mark Methven on Sunday mornings, at Gosling Sports Park. The work was hard at times but as one person said - Valuable coaching we could have done with years ago.
Mark was previously National Coach to Portugal (94-95) and Ireland (95-96). He is currently helping with England squad training at High Wycombe, and coaching several junior and senior internationals including Peter Knowles and junior Matthew Shuter. This is in addition to his part-time work for local charity, Wycombe Youth Action.
You may think coaching at club/league level would be less stimulating than international work. However, Mark revealed that he finds club coaching very enjoyable. International players are technically and physically excellent, and it therefore takes a lot of time to achieve any improvement. They also experience high-level coaching six days a week, and have heard it all before!
Club players, however, may have received little or no formal coaching before. They generally have gaps in the basics, and can quite quickly make huge increases in standard in particular areas of their play. They also often raise interesting questions which Mark confesses "challenge me!" This suits Mark, though, as he prefers to coach players who question and challenge, rather than "braindead" players who automatically do as they're told.
Players on the course were equally enthusiastic about Mark's coaching and what they got out of it, as you can see from their comments below:
What better way to spend 6 wet and windy Sunday mornings than hitting shuttlecocks against a wall, or running around an invisible partner playing shadow badminton! Well, all in the hope of improving our badminton, perhaps. The main gain for me was the realisation that I have to start thinking! This has come as quite a shock. Instead of just playing the shuttlecock I now have to think where I am, where my partner is, and what the opposition are doing. Early Sunday morning isn't a good time for me to practise this new skill - thinking - but I hope to apply it on future club nights and matches. Hopefully, my serve and court sense will also benefit from Mark's coaching. Mark's common sense approach, and his sense of humour have made the past few weeks well worthwhile and enjoyable.

GOSLING SPORTS PARK

5 courts available

6 Sunday sessions of very good coaching: 5 from Mark, and 1 from his father, Ron. We had sessions on warm-up, service, tactics, strokes, how to move around the court, and also the obligatory shuttle runs (which made us all think that we need to be fitter*...) The sessions were well structured; Mark would go through what we would practise, do a demonstration, and let us practise in pairs. These coaching sessions have certainly made me much more aware of how I am playing and how I should be playing - the two do not always match! Gosling Sports park is a 52 acre complex offering over 25 different sports. For information and to become a member phone (01707) 331036
It has been an excellent opportunity to think about badminton, as well as practising strokes and playing games. I have thoroughly enjoyed the coaching, particularly the session on mixed doubles when Mark explained that mixed is not men's singles with the added difficulty of having a lady at the net!

Many thanks to Mark Methven for an instructive course, and to Ashaway for making the course possible.

Coach Part 1

The Coach Part 1 qualification allows those who pass the course to be responsible for coaching others. So it is important to Herts that we keep a steady stream of players qualifying. The cost of the course went up considerably about two years ago, and since then it had not been possible to run a viable course because of the difficulty of finding players who could afford it.

However, in November and December, seven Herts attendees, including Peter Mulligan from the Hertford Area League and Gillian Gowers, Herts own England Ladies and Mixed Doubles star, attended the course at Bricket Wood Leisure Centre given by Advanced Coach, Ray Learney (photo, right).

They take their final assessment in January.

We hope they will all pass and swell to 33 the number of qualified Herts coaches who have renewed membership to the BA of E

The next Coach Part 1 course in our region will be held in Leighton Buzzard, Beds, starting 15th February. Contact is Evelyn Griffiths on 01582 474095

GRASS ROOTS

Ware Badminton Club

Ware Badminton Club is probably the oldest Club in the County.

The minutes of the first recorded Committee Meeting were dated 28th November 1930 but a newspaper article reporting on a Tournament held at Ware in 1931 stated that " the Club had been in existence for more than a quarter of a century". The club has been fortunate to play at the Ware Drill Hall since it was founded c. 1905. The Hall holds 4 courts and from the 30's to the early 60's many County and Area Tournaments were held there.

The first recorded match was against Hoddesdon in 1926. In 1931, Ware was one of the founder members of the Hertfordshire County B.A, and the club's match scorebooks show that teams have taken part in County and Area Leagues from that year right up to the present day.

Throughout the club's existence there have always been people willing to hold office at club and county level. For example, Mr G.H. Povey-Richards was Club Chairman and and an active member of the County Committee from 1949 to 1973, and organised Coaching,Tournaments and the County Leagues.

Another club member in the late 60's, W.E. Andrew, is currently the President of the B.A. of E. His wife Brenda played for the County over a 100 times and received the English Badminton Award in 1993 for "long standing exceptional service to Badminton in England".

Over the years several club members have played for the County. In 1955, Hugh Findlay reached the Semi Finals of the All England Mens Doubles and later played for England in the Thomas Cup in 1958 and 1961. Two other members, Ken Meek and J. Stanford, also qualified to play in the All England Championships in 1958.

Although not quite at that standard today, the Club still enjoys playing competitive badminton both on Club nights and in matches and we hope to continue for many years to come.

A purpose-built badminton hall for Hertfordshire

Badminton hall - draft design
Those of you who attended the AGM in June will know that the committee is currently investigating the viability of building a purpose-built badminton hall for Hertfordshire.

We have had discussions with potential sponsor, Goode Sport. We have also had meetings with several schools in the Welwyn/Hatfield area in our search for a suitable site with good access to and from all parts of the county, and for which we are likely to receive both planning permission and lottery money.

The next stages are to decide the site, obtain outline planning permission, agree a design, and prepare a business plan to demonstrate the financial viability of the badminton centre.

Can you help? Do you have expertise in any aspect of building design, relevant experience of the legal or financial implications, or have been involved in previous lottery submissions? If so, we need your advice and help. We would also like to hear your opinions about the centre and what you would want it to provide. Contact Malcolm Fraser on 01727 850966 if you can help, or want more information.
