November 24, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - Nunung Subandoro of Indonesia captured his first badminton tournament championship on the top international Grand Prix circuit today at the Vietnam Open. Subandoro, whose previous last big victory was the 1995 Indonesian national championship, defeated Yan Wei of China 15-6 and 15-3 in the finals.

Subandoro was joined in the first-time winner's circle by Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook of Malaysia who won the men's doubles title with their 15-6, 15-6 finals victory over Liu Yong and Zhang Wei of China.

Despite the two finals losses in the men's events, Chinese players did not leave the Vietnam Open empty-handed.

Both the women's singles finals and the women's doubles finals were all-China affairs. In the women's singles championship match, Sun Jian beat Zeng Yaqiong 11-5 and 12-9 while in the women's doubles, the specialist pair of Zhang Jin and Peng Xingyong defeated a scratch team consisting of the two women's singles finalists, Sun Jian and Zeng Yaqiong, with the score of 15-9, 12-15 and 15-8.

Liu Yong and Zhang Jin also combined in the mixed doubles to bring in a third 1996 Vietnam Open championship for China. Liu and Zhang beat Indonesians Sandiarto and Finarsih in the mixed doubles final 15-9 and 18-16.
