July 23, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - The top seeds at the Konica Cup (Singapore Open) badminton tournament who saw action today at the National Indoor Stadium in Singapore prevailed over their opposition and made their way to the third round of play, while several other seeds failed to make it to court due to injury.

In men's singles, top-seed Sun Jun had a difficult second game in his first round match against Malaysian Foo Yoon Keang. Foo extended the Chinese ace in the second stanza and forced a tie-break. Sun managed to subdue the Malaysian in the setting 5-1 to claim victory at 15-3 and 18-14.

In his second round match, Sun also had problems against Peter Knowles of England, dropping the second game 9-15. After the match, Sun said that he had difficulty adjusting to the drift at the end of the court where he played in the second set.

Sun won his match against Knowles 15-3, 9-15 and 15-4.

Second seed Heryanto Arbi also won his matches. He defeated Adrian Tay of Singapore 15-10 and 15-11 and then beat Chen Hong of China 15-9 and 15-5.

Fourth-seed Rashid Sidek and ninth-seed Yong Hock Kin, both from Malaysia, were not able to play due to injury.

Thirteenth seed Hwang Sun Ho of Korea and sixteenth seed Dicky Palyama of the Netherlands were upset victims in the first round.

Women's singles top-seed Gong Zhichao of China had an easier day than her male counterpart Sun Jun. After sitting out the first round with a bye, Gong barely broke into a sweat with her easy 11-1 and 11-1 second round win over Lim Tien Juan of Singapore.

Second seed Mia Audina Tjiptawan of Indonesia also had it easy, drawing a first-round bye and then beating Yong Jui Shan of Singapore 11-0 and 11-0.

Sixth seed Cindana Hartono of Indonesia failed to play due to injury.

Singapore champion Zarinah Abdullah disappointed the home crowd early in the day. Abdullah lost to Japan-based Zhang Wei Wei of China in three games. The Singaporean held 6-0 and 9-4 leads in the decider but could not hold on to her advantage. Zhang won the first round match 11-7, 7-11 and 12-9.

In men's doubles, world champions Budiarto Sigit and Chandra Wijaya of Indonesia easily beat Eddie Tham and Kenny Quek of Singapore 15-3 and 15-0 in the second round. Sigit and Wijaya had a first-round bye.

Second seeds Lee Dong Soo and Yoo Yung Sung of Korea had the easiest day of the top-picks. Lee and Yoo had drawn a first-round bye and then won their second round match by a walkover.

Fourth seeds Ge Cheng and Tao Xiaoqiang did not play due to a Tao injury .

Singapore favorites Zhao Jian Hua, the 1991 world men's singles champion from China who has been coaching in Singapore, and his partner, Singaporean Patrick K.P. Lau, extended Malaysia's Cheah Soon Kit and Chew Choon Eng in their first round encounter. Zhao "Kapow" was wowing the small crowd with his jumpsmashes and play at the net but the 33-year old playing coach ran out of steam in the third game, allowing Cheah and Chew to prevail 17-14, 16-18 and 15-3.
