October 2, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - The powerful Danish contingent rolled on to many victories in today's matches at the German Open badminton tournament being held in Saarbrucken. Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, the Olympic men's singles champion from Denmark and the German Open top-seed , went into action today and won both of his matches to move into tomorrow's quarterfinals.

Hoyer warmed up by trouncing Andrej Pohar of Slovenia in a second-round contest 15-4 and 15-4, and then finished his day by defeating Rikard Magnusson of Sweden, the tenth seed, 15-8 and 15-9.

World men's singles champion Peter Rasmussen, another Dane, also won both of his matches today to gain the quarterfinals. Rasmussen, the second seed at these championships, first beat Malaysia's Mohammed Roslin Hashim 15-12 and 15-5, and later beat the twelfth-seeded Dutch player Chris Bruil 15-6 and 15-2.

In tomorrow's quarterfinals, Hoyer will play the USA's fifth-seeded Kevin Han who survived two tight matches today, first against Gerben Bruijstens of the Netherlands 10-15, 15-4 and 18-13, and then against the ninth seed, Thomas Sogaard of Denmark, 11-15, 18-13 and 15-6.

Rasmussen will be matched against Germany's Oliver Pongratz, the fourteenth seed who upset Thomas Johansson of Sweden, the sixth-seed, 15-12, 7-15 and 17-16, in the tird round today.

Almost all of the Danish seeds came through the second day's contests a winner. Only the mixed doubles pair of Jonas Rasmussen and Ann Lou Jorgensen, the seventh seeds, were eliminated. However, it was still Denmark that rolled ahead into the mixed doubles semifinals since their defeat came at the hands of another Danish combination, Janek Roos and Helene Kirkegaard, 7-15, 15-11 and 9-15.

Danish pairs took two of the other three semifinal spots in the mixed doubles event. Top-seeds Jens Eriksen and Marlene Thomsen walloped the Australian sixth seeds, Peter Blackburn and Rhonda Cator, 15-2 and 15-5, while second seeds Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen had a surprisingly easy 15-3, 15-1 victory against the hard-hitting English player Simon Archer and his partner Nicola Beck.

England's Chris Hunt and Donna Kellogg, the third seeds, gained the fourth semifinal spot. They defeated Germany's Michael Keck and the Netherlands' Erica van den Heuvel 10-15, 15-12 and 15-7 in their quarterfinal matchup.
