COMMONWEALTH GAMES: TOP SEEDED ONG DOUBTFUL; COMPETITION BEGINS

September 16, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Ong Ewe Hock of Malaysia, the top seed in the men's singles event at the 1998 Commonwealth Games being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, may not be able to recover from a thigh injury in time to contend for an individual event gold medal. According to sources close to the Malaysian team, Ong's thigh injury, which he sustained on Sunday during a team event match against India's Pullela Gopi Chand, is worse than originally diagnosed. The injury is said to be a slight muscle tear instead of a muscle strain and Ong is reportedly unable to use the leg without severe pain.

Ong had a bye in today's first round action but he will have to decide whether he will risk further injury and gut it out or whether he will withdraw from the competition before his second round match against Pakistan's Ali Yar Beg is called.
