INDONESIAN OPEN: WONDERTEEN TOPPLES TOPSEED

October 30, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Taufik Hidayat, Indonesia's teenaged badminton wonder, continued to surprise at the Indonesian Open championships being staged at the Senayan sports complex in Jakarta. Fresh from his conquest of 1993 men's singles world champion Joko Suprianto in the round-of-sixteen yesterday, Hidayat outplayed his top-seeded teammate Hendrawan in today's quarterfinals and beat the current world number three 15-1 and 15-9.

Hendrawan's game, which is based on very tight net shots followed up by point-scoring smashes, was off-form today, specially in the first game. His youthful opponent quickly capitalized on Hendrawan's miscues as well as below-par court coverage and ran away with the first set 15-1.

Hendrawan tried to stage a comeback in the second game but he still could not muster enough quality and error-free play to overcome Hidayat.

Hidayat's win moves him into the semifinals where he will face a rested Yong Hock Kin of Malaysia. Yong won his quarterfinal match against 1995 world champion Heryanto Arbi of Indonesia without hitting a shuttle. Arbi was not able to play today due to an injury he sustained in yesterday's three-game affair against his compatriot Ronny Agustinus.

Second-seed Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen of Denmark survived a tight match against Johan Hadi Kusuma of Indonesia to book a spot in the men's singles semifinals. The two had swapped wins in the first two games with Kusuma, the 20-year old brother of 1992 Olympic gold medalist Alan Budi Kusuma, taking the first game from an error-prone Hoyer 15-11 and Hoyer capturing the second stanza 15-12.

In the decider, the younger Kusuma took a commanding 9-4 advantage but the experienced Dane then began to control the tempo and the net play. Hoyer pulled even at 9-all and then jumped ahead 13-9 before Kusuma was able to sneak in a single score. Hoyer then closed out the match and won at 15-10.

In the other men's singles quarterfinal, Budi Santoso of Indonesia came from behind twice to best compatriot Marlev Mainaky 15-8 and 15-8.

The men's doubles quarterfinals were all crowd-pleasing three-set matches. Chandra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan of Indonesia beat compatriots Ade Lukas and Budi Santoso 15-2, 14-17 and 15-10. Indonesian Olympic champions Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky defeated their younger teammates Hadi Saputra and Endra Mulyajaya 15-5, 15-17 and 15-9. Denny Kantono and Antonius Budi Iriantho, another of the top-flight Indonesian men's doubles combinations, bested Jens Eriksen and Jesper Larsen of Denmark 15-7, 13-15 and 15-10. Second seeds Flandy Limpele and Hian Eng guaranteed a sweep for Indonesia in the men's doubles event with their 12-15, 15-5 and 15-5 win over Lee Wan Wah and Chew Choon Eng of Malaysia.
