TAIPEI OPEN: SUN JUN COOLS RASMUSSEN DOWN

** This NEW SHUTTLENWS report is presented by YANG YANG Badminton Products and their Western USA agents BADMINTON ALLEY. **

January 21, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - China's Sun Jun ended Peter Rasmussen's run at the Taipei Open today and cooled the reigning men's singles world champion's hopes of defending his title this May at the world championships. Sun Jun, the second seed at the Taipei Open, prevailed today in a rematch of the 1997 world men's singles finalists 17-14, 9-15 and 15-9.

Rasmussen who was sidelined for most of last year due to injury and who has dropped in the world rankings is in danger of not even qualifying to compete at the world championships to be held in his home country of Denmark. Only two entries are allowed from each nation in each event with exceptions given to players ranked in the world top 16 at the end of April. Rasmussen's semifinal finish at the Korean Open last week had boosted his ranking but today's loss in the round-of-16 does not help his cause greatly.

In another round-of 16 men's singles match, 1995 world champion Heryanto Arbi lost to Denmark's Kenneth Jonassen 15-8 and 15-9 and is now in danger of falling out of the world top 16 and thus not automatically qualifying for the world tourney.

Malaysian players Rashid Sidek and Roslin Hashim defeated their Indonesian round-of-16 opponents and helped to wipe out Indonesia's chances for a Taipei Open men's singles success. Denmark's Poul-Erik Hoyer accounted for another Indonesian eighth-finalist - Rosobin Jeffer, and China's Chen Hong put out Irwansyah, the fifth Indonesian in the round-of-16. There are no Indonesians left in the men's singles competition.

Indonesia's Ellen Angelina(wati) who yesterday had a sensational upset win over women's singles top seed Camilla Martin of Denmark had a letdown today. She was beaten by Taiwan's Huang Chia-Chi 11-5, 8-11 and 8-11.

In another women's singles round-of-16 match, Korean Open runner-up Gong Ruina of China lost to Denmark's Mette Sorensen 5-11, 11-8, 11-6.

In men's doubles, qualifiers Bambang Suprianto and Sandiarto of Indonesia upended Olympic gold medalist Ricky Subagja and his partner for the tourney, Haryanto Halim 15-12, 6-15 and 15-12. Subagja and Halim also hail from Indonesia.

Denmark's new men's doubles combination of Michael Sogaard and Jim Laugessen upset third seeds Liu Yong and Yu Jinhao of China 15-10 and 15-9 and moved into their first top-tier quarterfinal as a pair.
