OLYMPIC GAMES: BADMINTON - THIRD DAY RESULTS KUSUMA ELIMINATES SUN JUN - ARCHER AND BRADBURY LOSE IN MIXED July 26, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - 1992 Olympic Games men's singles gold medalist Allan Budi Kusuma of Indonesia served notice that he is ready to win a second gold medal when he trounced Sun Jun of China 15-5 and 15-6 in a round of 16 match at the badminton competition at the Atlanta Olympic Games. Kusuma was exceptionally sharp as he repeatedly scored on jumping intercept-smashes of Sun Jun's attacking clears and lifts. The Indonesian's tactics threw Sun Jun's timing and game completely off-stride. Top-seed Joko Suprianto had a more difficult time against the tall Jens Olsson of Sweden. Olsson put his height and deceptive net play to good use as he battled the topseed point for point. In the end, though, the wily Indonesian prevailed as he found and exploited Olsson's smash defense on the backhand half of the court. Rashid Sidek was exceptionally sharp as he easily defeated Yu Lizhi of China, 15-5 and 15-2. Dong Jiong eliminated Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen, a 1992 Olympic Games bronze medallist. Dong easily won the first game 15-6 against a sluggish Stuer-Lauridsen. In the second, Dong seemed to lose concentration while Stuer picked up the pace. Stuer managed to force a 5-point setting or tiebreak at 13-all and kept it close at 14-all and 15-all before Dong finally prevailed at 18-15. Park Sung Woo of Korea, a 5/8 seed, beat a tenacious Fumihiko Machida of Japan 15-5, 15-9. Machida took the lead from park in the second with excellent defending and jumpsmashing but ran out of steam late in the match. Lee Kwang Jin of Korea, another 5/8 seed, defeated Canadian Iain Sydie 15-8 15-12. The lanky Canadian was playing the lefthanded Korean well but lost his concentration and composure when his complaint to the referee about Korean coaching from the sidelines during the match was ignored. In women's singles, the topseeds saw their first action and all of them played what essentially were light practice matches. In mixed doubles opening round play, medal contenders Simon Archer and Julie Bradbury of Great Britain were upset by the Indonesians Flandy Nimpele and Rosalina Riseu 15-5 and 15-6. Archer and Bradbury, the 1996 All-England finalists, had been expected to battle top seeds Park Joo Bong and Ra Kyung Min of Korea in the semifinals. Topseeds Park Joo Bong and Ra Kyung Min opened their gold medal campaign with a 15-3 15-6 win over the makeshift Canadian team of Iain Sydie and Doris Piche.
