OLYMPIC GAMES: BADMINTON - DAY FOUR RESULTS GUNAWAN AND SUPRIANTO ELIMINATED IN MEN'S DOUBLES July 27, 1997 (D.Shuttlenws) - The Indonesian pair of Rudy Gunawan and Bambang Suprianto, seeded 3/4, were eliminated by Malaysian rivals Soo Beng Kiang and Tan Kim Her in the round of 16 of the men's doubles event in the Atlanta Olympic Games. Soo and Tan took a thrilling first game 18-13 and then lost the second 4-15. In the third, the Malaysians put the pressure on Gunawan, the older and the slower of the Indonesians and came away with a 15-6 win. Simon Archer and Chris Hunt of Great Britain scored a minor upset as they defeated the 5/8 seeds, Pramote Teerawiwatana and Sakrapee Thongsari of Thailand, 18-14 15-11, to gain a place in the quarterfinals. In another men's doubles thriller, Ha Tae Kwon and Kang Kyung Jin of Korea ended the medal hopes of Jon Holst-Christensen and Thomas Lund of Denmark 15-11, 14-17, 15-11. In women's singles round of 16 action, the top seeds all came through. Only Mia Audina of Indonesia, seeded 5/8, had a difficult match against a determined Kelly Morgan of Great Britain (Wales). Audina dropped the second game to the Welsh lady 4-11 and had to survive a 3-point tiebreak in the third before winning at 12-9. In women's doubles, Qin Yiyuan and Tang Yongshu of China, seeded 3/4, extracted a revenge of sorts as they defeated their conquerors at the world women's team championships finals (the Uber Cup finals), Finarsih and Lili Tampi of Indonesia, 15-1 4-15, 15-6. The British pair of Julie Bradbury and Joanne Wright, seeded 5/8, were upset by Danes Ann Jorgensen and Lotte Thomsen 15-4 and 15-5. The defeat was the second disappointment of this Olympic Games for Bradbury. In yesterday's mixed doubles opening round, Bradbury and partner Simon Archer, highly touted as medal contenders, were eliminated by Nimpele and Riseu of Indonesia. In mixed doubles round of 16 action, the remaining seeds all won their matches, and 6 Asian pairs turned back challenges from European, Australian and Canadian teams. Only Michael Sogaard and Helene Kirkegaard of Denmark remain in contention for a medal in an event that was supposed to be a Western speciality.
