TOP PLAYER DOWNED BY CAREER-THREATENING DISEASE August 26, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - Ardy Wiranata, one of the top badminton players in the world, has been stricken with a form of hepatitis and may not be able to play internationally again. Wiranata who hails from Indonesia was a silver medalist in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and was a member of two world championship teams for Indonesia. He did not get to play in the just-concluded 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, despite his top-10 ranking. While Wiranata should be able to recover from the illness, Indonesian badminton officials indicate that he may no longer be able to reach the level of physical conditioning that is needed in top international competition.
