INDONESIANS SWEEP IN OWN OPEN by Mike Grossman (from reports filed by Y.M. Fong and Patrick Tan) August 31, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - Badminton players from host country Indonesia took all the titles at the recently-concluded Sony Indonesian Open in Medan, Sumatra. Like the Malaysian Open that was played last week, this Indonesian Open was missing many top names from countries other than the host as these players took time off to recuperate from the stress of Olympic Games training and competition. The absence of the top players allowed several lesser-known names to make their mark. In men's singles, the young Indonesian Budi Santoso managed to make his way to tonight's finals where he faced the veteran Joko Suprianto, also from Indonesia. Suprianto defeated the younger player in a one-sided match, 15-8 and 15-4. In men's doubles, Indonesians Heryanto Halim and Efraim Davis were surprise finalists. Their challenge was beaten back by Olympic bronze medalists Antonius and Kantono, also of Indonesia. The Olympians blasted the upstart pair in the first game 15-3 and then took a more tightly contested second game 15-10 as Halim and Davis played more competitively.
