TRANSWORLD SPORTS COMMITS TO SHOWING BADMINTON by Mike Grossman (with material from D.Shuttlenws files) September 3, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - The weekly international television sports highlights and news program - TRANSWORLD SPORTS - has confirmed its commitment to showcasing badminton. In a series of e-mail messages to an informal group of badminton fans who are lobbying for and promoting the presentation of badminton on television, the producers of the television program affirmed their show's commitment to showing badminton news and tournament highlights. The producers also apologized for not featuring the Malaysian Open in this week's edition of the show. Technical problems with the videotape from Kuala Lumpur prevented the inclusion of highlights from the Malaysian Open in the program. The producers have indicated that they will put on highlights from the Indonesian Open in the upcoming program. Highlights from other major badminton events will also be shown in future programs if video footage is available. Additionally, Transworld Sports will be sending a news team out to Malaysia and Indonesia in the next month to do a special feature on badminton in these two hotbeds of the sport. Transworld Sports is the only regularly scheduled program in the world that features and continues to feature badminton. A ten-minute highlight from the world men's and women's team championships in May in Hong Kong was shown on Transworld Sports in early June. Some action scenes from the Asia Cup in Korea in late June were also featured on Transworld Sport. Transworld Sport may be seen worldwide on various broadcast and cable networks. In the United States, it is shown on the Prime cable network on Fridays at 1:30pm. In Canada, it can be seen on TSN on Sundays (time slot varies) and on Mondays at 9:00am. (The schedule of Transworld Sports broadcasts worldwide may be found on the Transworld website http://www.trans-world-sport.com Also available on the website are summaries of the week's programs and a forum for Transworld viewers). Transworld Sports is also shown by many airlines as part of their in-flight entertainment package. NEW SHUTTLENWS (e-mail: n.shuttlenws@genie.com)
